Norwegians in America:
Almost two hundred years ago, the first Norwegians took to America to start a new life. Since then nearly 900,000 Norwegians have followed. At present, most Norwegian Americans only speak American, but there still are some who learned Norwegian at home and who continue to speak Norwegian as adults. These Americans are most often well up in their eighties and nineties.
In the NorAmDiaSyn project, we have traveled to America to interview them and let the recordings be the start of a new speech corpus of American Norwegian.
The NorAmDiaSyn project is an extension of the NorDiaSyn project. In NorAmDiaSyn we will also work on dialect syntax, partly along the lines of NorDiaSyn. The collected speech material will of course be suitable for other types of studies, both linguistic and historical.
