You will find the reading list for the course here. Print out and bring it to Fefor.

Paper

Those of you who want or need ECTS (European Credit Transfer Scheme) points should write the following paper (worth 5 points):

Please answer all three questions.
1) How can linguists make use of infrastructure tools in their research?
2) What methods are used by computational linguists for POS tagging?
3) What challenges exist w.r.t. transcription of spoken language?
Total length of paper: 12-15 pages (including figures and references)
The deadline for submission is 15. August, and you'll get a diploma stating your course work and your points by 15 September. Please send your submissions to Janne Bondi Johannessen.

Travel
Our train is the one that goes from Oslo to Trondheim (with our stop being Vinstra - about half way between those two towns). You will not get an ordinary ticket for the train, but your seat number will be sent to you by email.

Remember that you must keep ALL receipts, stubs of tickets, boarding cards etc. to get the journey reimbursed (for those of you who are eligible for funding). After the course you have to fill in the form(s) below. Look at the example below for how to fill in the travel expenses form. For those of you having a Norwegian bank account: fill in your bank account number. Others have to fill in the bank form as well. Weather
It is likely to be somewhat colder at Fefor than in Oslo, given its altitude. At the moment (May 22) it is around 10 degrees Celsius. The snow has melted now. Two important sources of information about the weather:

Activities
Given the nice location, the course program has a break at lunch time with various activities to get some fresh air and enjoy the scenery. You should therefore be prepared to have footwear that is comfortable for walking, ideally sturdy and with a high sole (in case the ground is soggy). There is also a swimming pool at the hotel.

Who can attend the course
The course aims at PhD and research students in language studies and linguistics. Applicants will be selected according to these criteria: position/degree, research project and country of home institution. Application deadline is 15. April, and notification will be given by 25. April 2009.

Course contents
Its main aim is to highten the awareness of future researchers in the importance of a thorough and scientific sound use of empirical data. The course will offer lectures in principles and methods of data collection, and the students will learn to do annotation ranging from transcription to grammatical tagging. The course will further show examples of how good data collections, corpora, have been used for language research, and in particular, for syntax. The staff are top scholars in linguistics and language technology, plus technical staff from the UiO Text Laboratory.

Cost
Students from the Nordic countries can participate in the course for free and get their costs for travelling covered; those from the Baltic countries can participate in the course for free and have to cover 30% of the costs for travelling themselves. Course participants from other countries can participate in the course for free and have to cover the costs for travelling themselves.

Course credits can be arranged.
